Sandhill Crane Hunts hero detail
The Hunt

Sandhill Crane at the edge of the prairie.

Sandhill cranes are species-specific hunts — when we hunt cranes, it's a crane hunt, not a mixed bag. We run full-body decoy spreads and hunt well-scouted fields to bring cranes within a few feet of the blind.

This hunt is available at no extra charge on any waterfowl package — but it's a limited opportunity hunt and depends on crane numbers in the area. Let us know ahead of time if you're interested so we can scout for cranes specifically.

Typically morning hunts produce better than afternoon. So if you choose to hunt cranes, we'll hunt sandhills in the morning and shift to ducks or snow geese in the afternoon.

Sandhill cranes are warm-weather birds — they leave at the first signs of winter — which is why September is the best time to hunt them in Saskatchewan.

Best in September · Daily bag: 5 cranes/hunter · Specifically scouted, full-body decoy hunts only — no pass shooting.

Quick Answers

Sandhill Crane Hunts FAQ.

Is the crane hunt always available?

No. It's a limited opportunity hunt and depends entirely on whether good numbers of cranes are in the area when you arrive. Let us know in advance you're interested in cranes so we can be prepared.

Do you guide crane hunts separately or as part of a waterfowl hunt?

Crane hunts are included as part of the waterfowl package — when cranes are present. Guides decoy cranes in the morning, then shift to duck or goose patterns in the afternoon.

Is sandhill crane meat actually that good?

Yes — they're called "ribeye of the sky" for a reason. Skin the bird, cut breast and wing meat from the bone, season, sear in butter, and finish to 135°F. We'll send you home with the full recipe.

What's the daily bag limit on sandhill cranes?

5 birds per hunter per day.
