A Typical Saskatchewan Waterfowl Hunt
A typical day at Prairies Edge Outfitting starts out very early in the morning. Your waterfowl hunting guide will pick you up at your accommodations at the previously specified time and you will travel a short distance to the hunt location, which is usually a recently harvested pea or barley field, that is providing feed for hundreds if not thousands of waterfowl.
The Morning Waterfowl Hunt in Saskatchewan
It is not uncommon to have snow geese, Canadian geese, speckle-bellied geese, and ducks all in one field at one time. However, in Saskatchewan, we typically target geese in the morning and ducks in the afternoon. Your guide will make sure that you arrive at the field with plenty of time to set up for the morning hunt. A hunter’s location in the field is as important as anything on a waterfowl hunt and our expert scouts will make sure to put you right where the birds were last seen feeding. Our experienced guides know the game, and they do this day in and day out, so they will make sure everything is absolutely perfect to maximize your odds of a successful waterfowl hunt.
Next, blinds and decoys will be put out and arranged according to your guide’s expertise. This can seem like a lot of work, but it is all part of the waterfowling adventure and well worth it once the action begins. Once you are all set up, your guide will go over a few guidelines with you; such as safety, what to do when the birds are coming in, etc. During the hunt, it is important that you pay close attention to your guide, as he will be calling the shots and you don’t want to miss out on birds.
Get Ready for the Duck and Goose Hunting Action!
Once the hunt begins, the action is usually non-stop with birds dropping into the decoys at first light. Normally as fast as you can reload and get back into the blind, you will have another group of birds coming in. Here at Prairies Edge Outfitting, we specialize in getting the birds to “finish” or land right in among the decoys almost on top of your blind! This not only makes for easy targets but also a very exciting hunt. In our area, it is not an uncommon thing for hunters to limit out in under an hour. After the hunting is done, there will be an opportunity for pictures and then it is time to pack up and head back to town for brunch.
Afternoon Waterfowl Hunting
After a hearty meal, we will discuss our options for the afternoon. Our guides will most likely arrange an evening pothole Saskatchewan duck hunt, or another field shoot targeting snow geese or ducks if you have not gotten a full limit of birds yet. In the event you have gotten a full limit of birds in the morning, you may decide to take an afternoon off to relax, or you can go scouting with your guide for the next morning’s hunt. Depending on seasons and availability some upland bird hunting may be available for Hungarian Quail or grouse, however, Prairies Edge Outfitting is not an upland bird hunting outfitter so please do not come with high hopes of great upland bird hunting.
